Uniting separate elements: Qahal/Assembly is delicate and atavistic—untamed and pacified.
Shape, psychogram, ancestral signs. Qahal/Assembly forms a framework, a circle of witnessing and togetherness. Ciphers for touch, interfaces of togetherness, embrace and intimacy. A fundamental longing for connection, as the ancient Hebrew word Qahal (community) describes. Maybe a longing in vain?
Ten paper collages are arranged in an open circle and lean against the backs of vintage chairs—a fragile presentation that can be dismantled in a flash. These days, my faith in rigid structures is shaken to its core.
On the back of the open circle, which shows the front of the chairs, there are notes on the seats with contradictory instructions. While the arrangement of the collages on the outside of the circle creates unity and cohesion, the back shows its opposite. The notes on the chair seats carry ambivalent and confusing messages: (not) stay, (not) go, (not) settle, (not) rest, (not) sit …
