In what is (not) there – voz iz (nisht) do Andrea Morein constructs a kind of “mapping” of her life themes, which she processes using multimedia and interdisciplinary methods. Like many of her works, this overview of her oeuvre is a collage that unfolds her work beyond a chronological sequence.
It illustrates themes spanning almost four decades, focusing on the search for a sense of belonging (stay or go?) – and even more than that: the search for unity beyond geography and identity. Her artistic practice is based on the principle of embodiment, a direct
engagement with the moment, which she describes as “IS-ness”. Her visual works are complemented by her own texts in German and English, as well as text quotes in languages such as Yiddish. She draws, dances, photographs, collages and constructs spaces that medially process her own themes – often in dialogue with works by other
artists.
“They are records of being, longing and belonging in a present in which the artist confesses
that the events since 7 October 2023 have ‘shaken her belief in fixed constructions to its
foundations”.’ (Almut Hüfler in her introductory essay).
